Transportation from the airport to Barcelo Maya Beach resort...?

We are traveling to Mexico for the first time next week. Because of the way we booked our vacation, ground transportation from the airport to the hotel was not included. When I contacted the hotel they want $162, which I think is high. I have heard horror stories about the buses and the cabs, but I am thinking that maybe a bus is the way to go. I am just worried about finding the right bus and how much it will cost when I get there. Any suggestions about the transportation or things to do or not to do while we are there would be greatly appreciated. Also if there are any places that we should avoid or places we need to see while there...

Rent a car from the airport, it is easy!  I always rent from HERTZ with no problem.  Do this before you arrive in Cancun, from your home.  I always rent for  8 days and with insurance and all I spend about $450 or so.  Worth it, since transportation in Cancun is expensive.  I prefer to fork out a little extra and be independent.  Believe me, if more people would rent cars...they would see so much more beauty and wouldn't miss out on so much.  PEOPLE, STOP BEING SO SCARED, IT IS NOT DANGEROUS AS YOU THINK!!!!  Just obey the rules/laws/get full coverage insurance and you are good!

I went there for the first time last April , and i too was a little skeptical of the buses but they werent as bad as i expected. They do drive a little fast, but it was really cheap. I dont remember the exact cost though. They pretty much stop anywhere you need to go just let them know when you get on.
