My family and I are planning a 3 day trip to St. Thomas. Do we need to rent a car once we arrive at the airport or is there another way to get around the city?

  1. Depends. Where are you staying?

If you are staying at the downtown hotels...then you can get by on justing using public transport. There is a bus system but most (even St.Thomian use the dollar taxi transport) they drive by and you just get in.

If not, then I recommend you consider renting a car. Check with your credit card company for deals..or call the USVI Tourism office for coupons. Rates here can be cheap if you prepare.

It is not easy to drive on the left...and by the way since most cars come from the mainland the steering wheel is on the right.  Driving is normally but when you turn is when people tyically forget to stay left...so companies put little stickers on the car.

Also ST. Thomas is highly congested for its size so try to avoid driving during rush hour 5-7pm.

  2. I've always rent a car, yes you have to drive on the left, but its really not as hard as you'd think.  Rent a car from Thrifty.com, the most I've paid was 16.00 a day, you can easily spent 3 times that a day on cab fare

  3. Taxi fares add up, so renting a car, jeep or SUV is the best way to get around St. Thomas if you want to explore the beaches, overlooks, and out-of-th-way restaurants and don’t want to depend other, cheaper, means of getting around. If you are staying in town, consider renting a car for a few days of your vacation. Often, the best rental rates are available from the major car rental chains, especially if you book well in advance. Per-day rental rates for an economy class car will run $30 and up from most rental agencies; some will quote rates as high as $60 a day. There is a $2.50 per-day government tax on car rentals, and additional fees for those rented at the airport. For most people, four-wheel drive will not be necessary, St. Thomas roads are well maintained.

    Have a great trip)

  4. There are open-air "cabs" and also a public bus system.  You can rent a car, but be aware that driving is on the left [with steering wheel on the left, also] and the roads are very twisty, sometimes narrow, and sometimes not well-marked.
