Hi

I live in BC and I just got a crazy deal on a 12 foot Lund with 6.hp outboard.Im dying to buy but I cant find answers to a few questions, hope someone can help..

Is it ok to tie it to the roof of my Ford Explorer or do I need a trailer?

If I do need a trailer, does it have to have breaks or signal lights? Any kind of lights?

Is there anything regarding transporting the motor I should be aware of?

Do I need a licence to operate the boat?

Does the boat have to be registered or insured?

Thank you so much for any info!

  1. You can tie it to the roof, probably going to want a Thule or Yakima to get some added width to accommodate the beam of the boat. I believe Yakima has a swing out device to make loading easier.

When you lay the engine down, be careful of the gear handle, I have seen them break off if the engine tips over, or slams hard against the handle.

I would recommend a trailer, it will be easier for hauling, loading, storage, and unloading. You will need lights, but brakes are not necessary for a boat that light. Brake lights, turn signals, and driving lights should all be one package.

You will not need a license to operate the boat, however you will need to register it.

Insurance is up to you. This boat may be so cheap that even a deductible will cover it if lost. However, I would recommend liability.

  2. 1. You can tie it to the roof of your Vehicle Securely., 2.  your tailor does not need brakes when you get one but it will need submersible Light,s  Brake, tail, and turn, 3.  the only thing about transporting a motor is disconnect the fuel line and let it run until it dies, this does two things, it keeps the carburetor from setting with fuel that could gum up after setting any length of time and it will have less tendency to fill your car with gas fumes. 4. no you do not need a boat license but it would be a good idea to take a boating safety course.

    5. in some states a boat with less then 9.9 does not need registration you will need to check with your local wildlife and fisheries office. 6. A boat is not required to have Insurance.

  3. On my Explorer the cargo bars were not wide enough for my dinghy, so I attached two pieces of 3" PVC pipe to the bars that were cut long enough to accommodate the beam of my Walker Bay.  Those pipes and two ratcheted tie down straps hold the boat securely while the outboard is on it's side laying on a plastic tarp in the back of the car.

Most jurisdictions require some vessel registration if using an engine for propulsion.

  4. If you have a rack it should be a good topper. The main thing you need to know is what is the beam?( distance at widest point) You need to haul it upside down. If you trailer you would need lights but not brakes. As far as outboard is it 2 or 4 stroke? 2 stroke just lay it in back on something to protect carpet. On 4 stroke make sure oil can't escape out carbs or exhaust.

don't know about license & insurance but a call to your law enforcment will answer that.
