Question:

Trapping and releasing wood pigeons query?

I have about 6 wood pigeons that sit in a tree in my front garden and c**p on our cars and it is a nightmare to get off as it goes rock hard really quickly. I want to get rid of them but dont want to kill them. They feed in my garden on the grass and i'm sure i could trap them and release them in a forest about 15 miles away. If i did this, would they return to my garden?

I know other pigeons might come and take their place but its worth a try.

Any help gratefully received, thanks

  1. there a hardy bird...youll be luck if u can trap then...if they sit over night then its a roosting tree...best i can sugest is a plastic hawk or similar stuck on your house roof...every night lob stones at them...in time they wont come back...

  2. Trapping the birds even for relocation is likely illegal without the proper permits.  You can purchase products ment to deter birds from your property including something as simple as a tape with calls from prediatory birds (hawks or owls)   that generally stop birds from roosting near by.  This is also likely to be easier and quicker than trying to trap the birds even if you are issued a permit.

  3. You probably could trap them and relocate them, however, there is a surety that they would return.  Pigeons and doves are notorious for returning back to "home"--the place where they can find mates and get the most food.

Also, this is illegal.  You'd need a federal and state permit if you are a private land owner to harm or relocate the birds.

You can, however, take safety measures.  At places like Walmart or Home Depot, you can purchase a fake and plastic owl.  These cost up to 15-20 $, but they are reliable.  These "dummy" owls can help keep away bats, mice, rats, other owls, etc.

There's only one drawback.  Owls don't prey on pigeons, but I don't know if the pigeons know this, or if there see no difference between Peregrine falcon and Owl.

You can also hire a falconer to bring his or her hawks to scare away the birds.  You don't need to pay them anything either, because falconers are always looking for places to go hunting and hawking in.  Especially if you live in a densely populated place or in the suburbs--falconers find it hard to find land to go hawking on because alot of places are private owned land.

You can contact your state or local falconry club.  Just type in "(STATE) falconry clubs" in Yahoo!'s search engine.  If you are still having no luck, try www.apfalconry.proboards19.com

Anyways, best of luck with your pesky neighbors!
