http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/news?slug=ap-insidetherings&prov=ap&type=lgns Arrogance really has no place in TRUE sportsman ship and arrogance really is most displayed by Americans' and its good to see them get face slapped by superior ability. But I think we can all agree this kind of talk really has no place in sport, if you are good, then be good like Phelps, dont say it with words say it with actions.

  1. Yes. But.  She was excited and enthustiastic.  Rash silly comments she surely regrets.  She's a hometown girl, I gotta stick up for her!

  2. I think they are trying to pull away attention from the fact that her coach misbehaved seen by millions on TV so they're trying to assasinate her character first.

  3. Yeah well I dont see americans going around and talking smack about other countries. And oh how funny it is when you all hate us when we do better but expect us to come running when you need aide because you cant win a fight. All you other countries are just as arrogant for talking like your so much better, as if your not guilty of causing any problems. Whats that about England waging war to control all of Europe? On wait, didnt Germany and Italy try to control the whole world too by force? Oh and lets not forget we won our right as a country fair and square when we completely kicked Englands a$$ and then we kicked Germany and Japan's a$$ too because Europe didnt have what it took to stop them. How hypocritical. Lets see the world try to win a war on its own for once without help from the USA. And maybe your governments should stop asking to borrow money on top of it. Im tired of my hard earned taxes being given to another country who takes it without question and then back-stabs.

Other countries are just as guilty for smack-talk in the olympics. She didnt do or say anything wrong. Why dont you stop pointing the finger when something doesnt go your way or assume every problem in the olympics or world is always our fault like the rest of the world is just so perfect and does no wrong.

  4. Ouch, America just keeps getting all the blows of criticism.

  5. Oh grow up.  You're shocked that competitors pump themselves up taking aim at the favorite before a big competition? And let's not pretend like the Russian's response was anything like humility.  This has the making of a great rivalry.  I say let them go at it.  When's the last time women's pole vaulting got any press.

  6. I'm not really paying a lot of attention to the Olympics, but I am aware of the Phelps phenomenon. Does he talk big before events?

I'm inclined to agree that athletes from the USA are inclined to talk big and use phrases like, "kick Russian butt". It seems to me that's hardly surprising when so many Americans believe with an almost religious fervour that they are citizens of the "Greatest Country in the World". (Whatever that may mean.)

I'm sure that, contrary to all the evidence, Jenn Stuczynski probably still believes that. Heck, given how the minds of athletes work, she probably already at least half-believes that she is _really_ the greatest woman pole-vaulter in the world and what happened a few days ago was just a fluke.

  7. No different than when the French relay team in swimming trash talked the USA team.  But Phelps said he does not mind as he uses it as more fuel to win.  It is too bad that it goes on but apparently it is done by some athletes, not just American.  So wrong? yes, Americans, not usually.

  8. It applies to everybody in the Olympics, not only to the Americans.

  9. Technically, it doesnt matter....unless they were competing for a medal higher than gold.....that is the Pierre de Coubertin Medal.

Only 10 people in the history of the olympic games have ever been awarded it.

  10. Who cares if she said " “I hope we do some damage,” “and, you know, kick some Russian butt.” !! She didn't say oh we are going to smash them, like the french did to the americans, she didn't say she was going to dominate or anything. She just stated she hopes that she does some damage and kicks some butt. Her only comp is russia, so ya went towards her. I don't see what the big deal is of her saying that.. she was hoping she won, not saying she was going to win. Big difference... Oh and because one person says something all Americans are arrogant... ya makes sense!

  11. Thats competitive talk, trash talking would be like, Yelena cant beat me"!! I'm the best!! Shes going down!!  blah blah blah..

But its still inappropriate to say that during olympics games...

    Lets kick some"Ethnicity here" butt..is a nono..

  12. i completely agree, it doesnt surprise me that that kind of trash talk came from an american. But it all blew back in face and now she knows "her spot"  . Arrogance really ruins the olympics, and i wish that the Americans could be like the rest of us and stop being so cocky when they're obviosuly in no position to do so
