compare and contrast the immediate and long-term effects of traumatic brain injury in early childhood vs. those sustained in later/adolescent years. thank-you!!!!!

  1. TBI in early childhood

    -brain is more resilient

    -less aware of loss than in adolescence

    -peers more accepting

    -parents see loss of potential- what they expected child's life to be like

    -Young children typically are more adaptable

    TBI in adolescence

    -more skills have already been learned, relearning may be easier

    -Attitudes of peers may be less understanding, friends have a harder time dealing with changes

    -Loss of what was previously achieved, goals, etc

    -Depression, loss of sense of self more common

    These are just some effects that I have observed in my work with people with TBIs and in college classes. It truly varies by individual, type and severity of injury, and opportunities that are available to the person after the injury
