Question:

Travel Cancellation Penalties?

by  |  earlier

If my boyfriend and I split up before our holiday and decide to cancel, is there any way of avoiding losing all of the money? We have paid the flights in full to the sum of £2500 total as we are due to travel at the end of July.

We haven't taken out travel insurance as yet..would this be a viable option to cover some of the loss?

Any suggestions would be great!!

  1. Whether you can get you money back from the holiday company depends on their cancellation policy.

As for insurance, I understand that you have do not have insurance but want to take out insurance knowing that you wish to claim holiday cancellation off the insurance - this would be insurance fraud. However, if you and your boyfriend are still going the holiday, take out insurance,  and then decide to cancel the holiday, you may be covered. You would need to read the insurance small print.

  2. Trip cancellation insurance would be a good idea. Just make sure to read the fine print and make sure you are aware of the reasons for cancellation and refund. Some will allow you to cancel and get a refund no matter what the reason other insurances only do it if you have a medical excuse with proof.

  3. 10 Tips to Clip Travel Cancellation Fees

Most airlines will allow you to cancel a ticket without penalty within 24 hours of the original reservation. After that, you're on your own unless you've purchased a fully refundable fare.

For nonrefundable tickets, most airlines will allow you to change your ticket for a fee up until the time of departure (generally $100 for domestic travel, and $200 for international, plus any fare difference), but only if you contact the airline. If you don't contact the airline and don't fly, your ticket has no value.
