Travel Journalists???

Hi there,

Ok...so i want to get into travel journalism because i want to travel Rome, Venice, Vatican, Paris....and a lot more cities..!

I absolutely love to travel....meet new people...know about their cultures...it so fascinating!

But would that be enough for becoming a travel journalist?

I've worked in a travel and tourism company...creating travelogues for different cities and their attractions around the world...but that wasnt a field job.

Any kind of suggestions and expert advise would be appreciated.

And yeahh..if any of you want to share your travelling experiences with me, you're always welcome, i'd be delighted! :D

  1. As a journalist of many years' standing, I have to warn you that travel (like sport) is a highly sought-after and competitive area and you won't go straight into travel writing, unless you're lucky enough to land a junior job on a magazine. Even then you will get only the trips that nobody else wants - the senior guys keep the best perks very much to themselves. Also, before you even get started you will need to gain a qualification in journalism, which will take several years.

If you want to do this type of work purely because you want to get paid for travelling, why not get a job that will involve travel right from the off, such as cabin crew for an international airline? You could then keep a blog or write formal feature articles as you go, and see whether magazines or newspapers are interested enough to offer you a writing job on the back of that. If you're good enough, that's always a possibility.
