Does anyone have any suggestions for a 3 week trip to Mexico? We want to do beaches as well as some adventure and site seeing as well as cultural things. We want to be able to fly to one place and stay for about a week in each and travel to the next by bus. Nowhere unsafe! Any suggestions on towns/beaches we can go to?

thank you!

  1. Fly into Cancun,  take the bus south two hours to Tulum and stay at my favorite hotel on that coast: Posada Luna del Sur.  Click the link below to read reviews of the hotel.  Book it online because lots of people love it and there are only twelve rooms  From there, you can go snorkling at Xel-Ha, visit the ruins at Coba and visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere.  Then if you want to see more of the Yucatan, bus down to Chetumal then over Campeche (an interesting town) and up to Merida (a great city) then over to Piste and spend a day at Chichen Itza.  Then if you don't have any time left, it's only two and a half hours back to Cancun.  But if you still have time, check out the town of Valladolid and the ruins at Ek Balam just north of there.

  2. I had a great trip once where we flew into Mexico City, spent a couple of days shopping and museum hopping,  then rented a van (we were 6) and just drove around Michoacan. If you are not too many people, you can rent a VW Bug really inexpensively and have more freedom than riding a bus. We used common sense and felt safe. The people are very friendly and helpful.

There are gorgeous, small towns like Morelia, Uruapan, & Patzcuaro, that have really inexpensive little hotels, usually in the main plaza, that are clean & charming. With fireplaces in the rooms and bird cages hanging from the bouganvilla laden balcomies. Cheap meals, always with a side of rice & refried beans.

Lots of old volcanos to explore with rented horses and beautiful mountains. Nice lakes in the area too.

We made our way to Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo to finish our trip at the lovely beaches.

Another trip we did the Yucatan.

We flew into Merida and spent a couple of days there because we liked it so much.

Then rented a Bug and drove around the Yucatan looking at all of the incredible ruins like Chichinetza and spending several days in Valladolid that has lots of cenotes, clear, underground pools of water, that make great swimming or scuba-ing. We went through Cancun (quickly, it's like Las Vegas-on-the-water), Playa del Carmen down to Tulum. This trip was just my husband and I and we had a blast.

Anyway, I would highly recommend both Michoacan & the Yucatan.

  3. My vote would be the Yucatan Peninsula

  4. Well, you should come to La Paz, Baja California Sur. Is an small town, but is nice. There are many beaches near, like El Sargento, El tesoro, El Tecolote...and another towns, Like Todos Santos, El triunfo, San José del Cabo, or Cabo San Lucas. The most far is about two hours of road.

  5. for the genuine colonial go to the Bajio region, but avoid San Miguel de Allende, too touristy and expensive, instead , land in Leon and make it your center of operations, Leon is a modern city with all the ammeneties but still off the beaten path yet within reach of Guadalajara and Morelia, within 100 miles. rent a small car, preferably manual transmission because of the hilly terrain, like a Clio or Tsuru and explore the small colonial  towns within easy reach from Leon. If you must go to San Miguel, its about 30 minutes from Leon.

You could explore by bus, but only the smallest or second class lines visit the small towns and villages and bus service is sketchy at nigth so you migth find yourself stranded.

For the beach, if its the sea, i prefer Manzanillo Its not a crazy rave town like other resorts but more of a sleepy seaside town with some fun to be had for those who want it. very friendly for families . If you want to go to a nice lake, dont go to chapala, its very ugly now, you could go to Patzcuaro but i recomend Tangancicuaro, its on the way to patzcuaro rigth outside Zamora, there is a pretty lake there called Camecuaro.
