Travel/Volunteer ABROAD without paying a small fortune?

I am a college student who just got my A.A. and before I transfer, I want to travel and volunteer abroad. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of any ways to do this without paying a fortune? I'd like to do it this fall if possible, for up to 3 months...but even with all the research I'm doing, I'm not coming up with much!

Peace Corps and U.N Volunteering is out, I don't meet the degree or age (25 +) requirements

No Churches around here are doing mission work or are doing it just for the summer

Please, no "volunteer in your hometown" I can do that anytime. I feel like right now is the opportunity to do that abroad.

  1. You can travel on the cheap if you want to take the bus and stay in hostels instead of hotels. Most volunteer agencies want to get some return for their investment in you (air fare, medical insurance, dental insurance . . .) so they ask you to work for more than 3 months.

It doesn't sound like you are a member of any denomination. If you are, you could ask the national HQ if they know of a large church in another area that is sending out volunteers and has room for another set of willing hands.

  2. Everything I have readhas asked for a crapload of money.. it would be best to just save up and either backpack or join a travel group to see things.. it just isnt worth it in my opinion topay them to the oppertunity to work un-paid.
