how are they how much is the cost are they free ? cuz do they sign you up for stuff ? would you get on if you driving from mn to California what stuff do they all do ?

Travel agents normally don't handle driving vacations. They are a business and have to make a profit. There is no money in driving vacations. The best thing to do for a driving vacation is to join AAA. They specialize in those.

Travel agents will assist you with airline tickets, cruises, and tours. They provide advice on what to see, where to stay and, for foreign countries, provide information on passports, visas, and vaccinations. They will search for the lowest airfare and for hotels in your price range.  

You can expect to pay a service charge for airline tickets because airlines no longer compensate them for issuing tickets and they can't work for free.
