Travel by train...?

I really really want to travel somewhere on a train. But i am not sure where to, or how to even go about booking a trip. I have never been more than 100 miles in any direction from where I live in my entire life. so what i want to know is how much does it cost, roughly, where are so good places to go (I live in wyoming) I think i would live to go east , any information would be greatly appreciated.

We looked into AmTrak once or twice and it was always pretty cheap, BUT also very time-consuming.  From what I understand, they share the tracks with freight trains and if a freight train needs the track, AmTrak is literally sidetracked until the freight train passes, which can really increase your travel time (as in, arriving several hours after the scheduled arrival on a 3-4 hour trip).  Bottom line, even though it's pretty cheap, it's faster to drive shorter distances (say, within 3-4 hours).

So if time was not a concern, I'd like to take a trip through New England in the fall to see all the beautiful leaves (of course, we're in the South, where leaves just turn brown and drop off the tree - not very pretty).  Or maybe along the West Coast, where you could stop and dip your feet in the ocean before continuing on.  Or the East Coast, where you could start in D.C.  with all the tourists sites, then chug up to New York and catch a Broadway play, before tooling up to Boston or Providence or parts further north.

Travelling by train is a very beautiful way to see the states. You can get some deals if you book yer ticket far enough in advance, but sadly Amtrack is often quite expensive. It was more expensive to go Amtrack coach coast to coast than to fly, you must consider that you must pay for food. Sneak beer on...it's much cheaper. Do it if you can afford it. If not and you don't want to Bus you should bicycle...thats what I did, best trip of my life, maybe except India where I walked almost everywhere I went.

You need to get out.  Amtrak is a great way to meet people.  Also don't be in a hurry to get to your destination.  The purpose of the train in to enjoy the sites along the way.

Going down the Pacific Coast is nice, Seattle to Los Angeles.

Amtrak is the way to go.  You'll get to meet different people on the train, share a few drinks, watch a movie, etc.  However, I highly recommend getting a sleeper car because if you are in the general sitting area and are traveling overnight - you are in for an ugly evening.  The sleeping cars are expensive, so you may want to take a friend with you to help with the cost.

Since you live in Wyoming, you may want to travel to the Pacific Coast, and perhaps upwards to Canada.

Look for their route map... it's a great thing to look at and dream of seeing all you'd like to see.

Amtrak is very limited... so looking at the map can help prevent you from trying to get places that are difficult or impossible to get to by train.

I'm from Michigan and have only taken the train to Toronto. It was four hours of fun and relaxation. Loved it! In Europe I've traveled the train extensively, and it is really the way to go. When I was eighteen I got a Eurail pass and went everywhere for three months one summer. I met so many interesting people. I strongly recommend it if you want to travel in a relaxed atmosphere and meet other like minded explorers. See a travel agent or try Amtrak on-line to start. I am sure they can find you an itinerary that would suit your needs for adventure. Don't be afraid to go alone. I did and was a single women. Met some really cute men from all different countries! Have fun!

wow you have never been 100miles froom where you were born  in 23 years!! that is amazing poor you. I generally find that traveling by train in the us is overpriced and not that great, i suggest you travel to europe and travel by train, you not just travle through different states but different countries. Have you tried bullet train Japan? can take you almost everywhere in Japan. It is one of the faster in the world too.

Hi Blue Eyed. I saw your info and I hope that is you and your family because you all look very nice. You are a strong person, but one who has been through too much for a person of your age. You need to move more than just a train, but if that will help you, then I will try to help too. You have a couple of choices. Go south to the desert; go east to Chicago; go north to Canada. The whole thing can come in from around $200 to $500 depending on how far you go, where you stay, what you eat, etc. Take some books and a comfortable pair of shoes. And above all: cheer up. google Amtrak...it is really cheap...Ive traveled from the West Coast to the East Coast at a very low price...good luck
