Travel from Basel/Mulhouse to Montpelier?

I would like to travel to Montpellier over the easter break with my mom and son. The problem is that I can't find direct flights and the trains take 8+ hours, indirect flights are incredibly expensice. Any suggestions for an alternative route. Stopping over for a night somewhere in both directions is not a problem.

by car, take the swiss highways and then come back to the French ones.

It will be cheaper if you own the Swiss highway pass.

If you don't take the French toll-highway, it is the fastest way to Montpellier (around 6 hours if no traffic)
