Travel from Basel/Mulhouse to Montpellier?

I would like to travel to Montpellier over the easter break with my mom and son. The problem is that I can't find direct flights and the trains take 8+ hours, indirect flights are incredibly expensice. Any suggestions for an alternative route. Stopping over for a night somewhere in both directions is not a problem.

Well, there are no direct flights but I'm not sure what you consider "incredibly expensive" since a quick search reveals the price for flights via Paris at $387 round trip with advance purchase.

I presume the problem is that you have waited until the last minute which always makes things more expensive.
