Interested in learning about train travel throughout Europe since I have never been. I will be traveling from CDG Airport in Paris to Lucca, Italy and am wondering the best way to do it. Would it be better to fly or take a train?

Many thanks

  1. EasyJet has some flights to Pisa from Paris Orly airport for as low as 38.99 euro from July through October. This tends to be the 6 am flight; there's also a flight at 6:55 pm for as low as 71.99 on some days I checked. There may be other days where it's cheaper. From CDG, you'd need to transfer to Orly to catch an EasyJet flight. http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp

From the Pisa airport, you can take a train to Lucca in about 40 minutes to an hour (including a train change at Pisa Centrale station). http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovi...

The train from Paris to Lucca take 12 to 14 hours and require between two and five train changes not including getting from CDG to the Paris Lyon or Paris Bercy station. One option by train would be to take the night train from Paris Bercy to Bologna change to a train to Prato and change there to a train to Lucca. The standard price is 142.55 including a berth in a compartment with four beds. However, if the "Smart" price is available when you want to go it's 67.55 euro right now. The "Smart" price is a discounted fare on international trains that start or end in Italy. There are a limited number of places available at this price on a given train. You can use the Italian train website above to check specific schedules and prices for Paris to Lucca trains.

I've been on the night trains between Paris and Bologna several times. I like these trains because I can sleep through the night and arrive early in the morning and have a full day when I get to Paris or back home.
