Travel health - how do you know whether cheese is pasteurised or not?

I've read health warnings about consuming unpasteurised cheese when travelling. I'm going to Croatia in a few weeks - how do I know what cheese is pasteurised and what isn't, or should I just avoid cheese althogether?

  1. If you are healthy there is no problem eating unpasteurized cheese.

Only people with poor resistance, like small children and people in their 70 or older or suffering from health problems, should be a little careful.

And of course Americans who are never in contact with any kind of germs and very tender.

When you go for packaged cheese it will have a mention for pasteurized or non pasteurized on the packaging, otherwise, go into a good shop and ask.

Find someone who can translate for you, a little English will be enough for questions like these.

But if you like cheese, do not avoid it altogether.

Cheeses that are made locally will add to the joy of your trip, and remember, people ate unpasteurized cheeses for ages and it was one of the best ways to make milk into something that could be used for a long period.

In Europe the unpasteurized cheeses are admired for their good taste and freshness, but if you are really scared (or have poor health) there will be enough 'factory' cheese too.

Most of those will be pasteurized, and labeled as such most likely.
