Travel in December from MEL to HKG?

Looking for a cheaper ticket from Melbourne (Aus) to HK in December, say after 20 but before 29. Horribly expensive on websites such as webjet, zuji, travel and bestflights.

Any suggestions on websites or travel agents in Melbourne?

I heard airlines release seats over time, is this true?
