Travel in London?

is one day long enough to travel around London and explore the city?

Not at all!  You need nearly a week

If you have a full day and plan on being very busy I think it is very possible to see the main sites and have a good day, though you wouldn't even begin to scratch the surface of what London has to offer.  If you only have one day I would recommend staying in the city center, many of the most popular sites are here and within walking distance of each other.  If you ordered London Eye tickets online ahead of time I think in one day you could realistically visit the London Eye, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus with eating 2 meals in authentic English pubs.  You may even have time left to hit the shopping on Oxford Street.  You can easily walk between these sites without having to worry about getting a tube ticket and wasting time going underground and coming back up.  You will be busy, but I think it would be doable, expecially since you can sub any of the sites I recommended for ones more appealing to you.  If your schedule allows I would try to give London at least 2-3 days though.

I've been in London for several years and there are still areas I have yet to visit.

You will need to be selective. Do a little research to find what interests you and try to stay in a smallish area. You don't want to waste time on the Underground system.

One Day!!!

You must be kidding

you need a life time to travel around london and know what the city is really all about

the solution to this is live there and I am using that solution right now.

You would need a week to get a good feel of the city and the surrounding areas

and after that you may come back again many times and that will just make the experiances better and better!!!!
