  1. International medical insurance covers you for medically necessary care or treatment, except for preexisting conditions and excluded activities such as skydiving, scuba diving...

See link below for more information.

    Don

  2. I would look at one of the travel insurance comparison web sites which allow you to read the policy provisions before you buy.

There are 3 things to keep in mind:

    1.  the level of medical coverage, is it enough?  Check your own health insurance and see if it will cover you outside the USA.  Once you know the extent of coverage than you can select a plan that will cover you adequately.

    2.  the level of medical evacuation coverage, is it enough?  Worse case medical evacuations from overseas can exceed $100,000.  They are rare but when they occur they are expensive.

    3. does the policy exclude manual or volunteer work?  Travel Insurance policies have to say what they mean.  If it appears to be covered and the exclusions don't remove coverage than it is.  Example, if a plan says it will pay medical expenses up to $50,000 while you are on your trip and the exclusions don't specifically(mountain climbing, etc.) or generally (war, etc.) exclude your activity than it's covered.

All of the comparison sites have 800#'s that you can called and where you can talk with a live person who can help you select a plan.

  3. Tom said it correct, go with travelex.

  4. I spend a lot of time abroad volunteering and I have always used TravelEx.   You can get a free quote here and their policy is easy to read and detailed:  http://www.travelex-insurance.com/index....

  5. The best way would be to call a reputable company (such as the AA or your bank) to get a quote and explain exactly what you need - a real person should be able to tell you exactly the type of cover you need - much easier than an online form.

Don't buy straight away unless the price is great, and ask for the quote to be emailed to you, so you can read the terms and conditions and check you are covered for what you want to do (I expect some volunteering work may be more hazardous than other). That will show you what to look for when getting other quotes.

Edit - Just for Insurance Pickle, in the UK, the Automobile Association (commonly known as The AA, www.theaa.co.uk) does sell insurance even if not always cheap, and most UK banks do too...

But hey, don't let facts get in the way of a 'good joke'.

And my advice to go with a reputable company, not someone own blog / business on the side still stands...

  6. Considering that AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) doesn't sell travel insurance and neither does a bank.....I'd suggest calling a broker that deals with international travel medical insurance.

I have links to three different companies on my site...

    http://insurancepickle.com/international...

It gives you details, exclusions and all in all the coverage is quite inexpensive.
