  1. its not a green card its an E111. used to be a form but you now get a card for 1 year.

    you can get the details from thje post office and the card takes a couple of weeks to come through so make sure you get it well in advance

    or you can do it online https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

  2. It used to be known as an E111 form. Its now known as an EHIC - Eiropean Health Insurance Card. The post office has application forms that you have to fill in and send off for the card. Its free and takes about 2 weeks. You can also apply online or via a phone line which is slightly quicker. All the info is on the form. The post office do noy issue the actual cards.

    The EHIC entiles you to basic, emergancy medical care in EEC countries in state hospitals . It does not cover on going treatment. It will not cover travel back to the UK by air ambulance, cover the cost if having to extend your stay, new flights home etc. Only travel insurance will do this. You really should take out travel insurance as this covers you for medical care etc but also lost bagggage delays etc. It is a condidition of many insurance policies that you must have an EHIC and any claim will be refused if you do not have one. An EHIC makes getting emergancy care easier too as the hospitals will ask to see it. Medical care abroad is expensive so get insurance.

  3. You can apply for ther new 'European Health Insurance Card' online ( you will need your medical number) The link that the previous answerer has given you is correct, but the card is catually valid for 5 years.

    I have to say though, that this only covers you for basic medical insurance...it doesn't cover you for any losses you might incur, i.e. loss of luggage, money etc....for this, you really should take out a travel insurance policy. Some holiday companies do insist that you have travel insurance, and, for the sake of a few pounds, its well worth it!! Check out travel insurance on;

    www.moneysupermarket.co.uk. They provide some policies on here for about a tenner!!

  4. I,ve never heard of it being illegal to not have travel insurance. But it would be reccomended just incase you lose your belongings or have an accident. You also need a European health insurance card. Contact these for advice,www.dh.gov.uk/travellers. Tel; +44(0) 20 7210 4850 (mon-fri 9-5;uk time) or Health information www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk tel; 0845 46 47 (24 hours; uk only). Hope this helps.
