Travel options in Chennai,India?

We are going to India on a 3 week vacation. What would be the best option of getting around chennai for regular activities like shopping, visiting friends etc? Call taxi or renting a cab on daily /weekly basis. I would have 4 + 1 people travelling.

Renting a taxi on a per/week  basis might be good idea --you would have to have sort of a plan for all the long distance destinations you might want to visit those that would require  more time travelling to and fro, plus time spent at the destination itself.

For shopping and visiting folks within Chennai -- you could get it done on a per day rent basis  -- again some sort of a plan on what you want to purchase and knowing where to get them will make the shopping trip a lot easier.  

Some TIps that I have found useful :

1) Check with locals for recommendations on reliable/honest taxi  companies/drivers

2) Discuss rates with the driver, after checking on what the prevailing rates are  with local residents.

3) Make sure you let the driver know that wait time is included in the final rate agreed upon -- you might have to give some lunch money to the driver separately.

4) Keep some reserve for unforseen situations, like taxi breakdowns, getting caught in unexpected long traffic jams  where you might have to take alternate long routes or other emergencies.

5) When all your touring/ sightseeing/ shopping  is done, you can give the driver  a bonus.
