Question:

Travel question about public transportation in Detroit, can anyone help?

I am going to game 5 of the Stanley cup finals on Monday 6/2 in Detroit. I was hoping to get some advise on how to get from the airport to the Joe lewis arena. I was hoping for bus information, trying to avoid the cab thing. I have looked at the public transportation web site for the City of Detroit, but that was no help.

So I am asking any Red Wing fan on how I can get to the game and see the cup skated on the ice. Thank you who ever writes back.

  1. Your best bet would be to take Metro Cars or a cab (sorry). The buses don't run all the way out there and I wouldn't recommend them for tourists anyways.

Of course you can always rent a car which might actually be cheaper depending on who you chose. If you decide to take that route, just head to I-94 east until you see the exit for Lodge south. Get off on that exit and it will take you straight downtown. Your best bet for parking would be under Cobo Hall which is really close to the arena. You can email me at my site below and I can find some great parking places for you as I'm headed downtown tomorrow for the Red Bull Air Race. Just go to "Contact" and fill out the form and I'll get back to you right away :)

  2. My husband flies in and out of Metro every week, and we are not aware of any city buses that travel to the airport.  The only transportation are the cabs or the hotel shuttles.  Unfortunately there are not a lot of public transportation options.  But if you're staying in the city, there's a good chance your hotel might have a shuttle, I would definitely check there.

I'm sorry you will have wasted so much time and effort coming to Detroit to see your hopes and dreams crushed on the ice. ;)

EDIT: Be warned, 2eighty8 has a really good suggestion, but it does not work in Detroit.  You definitely want a method of transport that will take you directly to your destination.  The closest bus stops from the airport are in not so pretty areas that aren't real tourist friendly...

  3. Yo dawg, It's Detroit. Jus' getcha  9 mil and carjack some m**o and threaten to busta cap in his @ss. Yo, straight up. Dat's ill foo'.

    Word.

  4. There aren't any buses that run from the airport all the way down to the Joe Louis Arena.  Your best bet is to save some money and catch a cab.  You can go straight down I-94 to I-75 (although there is some construction right there), take it to 375, and it'll curve right onto Jefferson.  Stay in the left lane, go through the tunnel, under Cobo Arena, and the Joe Louis Arena is the big building on the left with the purple octopus on the left side.

    Have fun!

  5. Catch a cab to Dearborn, (15-20 mins) ride the bus from there. Not bad at all, only 15-20 mins after stops to downtown.

    MDOT....Busses

    Semta ....Busses

Good food (Middle Eastern) in Dearborn.

Good food in Mexican Town S/W Detroit.

  6. Don't know how Detroit's bus and cab system works, but in Toronto (before buses went up to the airport), people would just cab it to the closest bus stop or subway station. Saved them quite a bit of coin as opposed to going straight to their destination. Just another option for you.
