  1. Timetable information for trains below.

You have already been referred to google earth but the Wises page below is also useful.

Plimmerton is on our main north/south road, State Highway 1.

It is on the Paraparaumu rail line and is about a half hour train journey from Wellington.  It is likely that your rental car pickup will be close to Plimmerton railway station as the business and shopping areas in Plimmerton are relatively small- the place isn't really that big altogether!   Enjoy the view of the harbour on the left hand side as you pass from Porirua via Paremata to Plimmerton.

Note that train fares increase on 1 September.  If you can plan it around getting there during the middle of the day on weekdays you can get an offpeak fare which is cheaper than full fare.

I have "thrown in" some Plimmerton webcam links- enjoy!

Note re State Highway 2: it does not go to or through Plimmerton as suggested by another respondent.  State Highway 58 is the link between state highway 1 (which does go through Plimmerton) and state highway 2 (which goes through the Hutt Valley.)

Best to use state highway 1 to get to and from Wellington unless you want to take your time and use the scenic route or if there is serious congestion on state highway 1.)

And if going north definitely use State Highway 1 unless you are heading for the Wairarapa!

  2. There are only two roads out of Wellington -State Highway 1, and State Highway 2.

Plimmerton is about 15-20 minutes north of Wellington on State Highway 1, but it may take quite a bit longer during peak traffic hours.

Dead easy to find Plimmerton, the highway goes through it.

The rail takes about as long and the station to get off at is "Plimmerton".

It's named after a former politician by the name of Plimmer.

Check it out on Google maps or go to www.googleearth.com

  3. You can also go to www.yellowpages.co.nz and click on the maps function.  It will give you driving instructions and an estimate of time... I think the above answers though have everything you need.
