Travelers Championship: Nathan Green, Will Claxton score 65 after round 1
On Thursday, after round 1 of the Travelers Championship concluded, there were some unusual results to be seen.
If we look at the leaderboard after round one, we will come to know that the likes of Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and Hunter Mahan are not leading.
It is David Mathis who is leading after the first round. He shot 6-under par to lead the tournament, and also aced the eleventh hole.
The real surprise comes when we see T2. It is shared by three people, Nathan Green, Will Claxton, and Fredrik Jacobson.
It was always expected from Jacobson to do well in the event, as he is defending his title but Will Claxton and Nathan Green have just come out of the blue.
Nathan was ranked at 104 coming into the tournament while Claxton was ranked at 67, but their performance has surprised everybody.
What would one expect from a player who is ranked 104? May be an average performance, just in to make the cut.
On the contrary, sports are full of surprises! One can never know what comes next. It is not the ranking that matters, it is the performance of a player on the very day which counts.
Green and Claxton both shot at 65 to finish the round at 5-under par.
This season, on the PGA Tour, Nathan Green has played 11 tournaments and managed to make the cut in only 7 of them.
He has only one top-25 finish. Nevertheless, judging by his performance at this event, surely, more things are to come from the Australian.
Claxton is another surprise package at this year’s Travelers Championship. The guy has played 16 events and managed the cut in 11 of them.
He has three top-25 and one top-10 finishes, a below par season so far for the American. Will Claxton’s best performance this season came at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, where he finished T9.
If Claxton continues his good run of form in the next rounds, we might see a new winner at this year’s Travelers Championship.
