Travelers Championship all set to kick off this week on PGA Tour
PGA Tour will return to its first event, the Travelers Championship, after the completion of a whirlwind US Open which was staged at the Congressional Country Club for the 111th time. The tournament with a purse of $6,000,000 will be played at
the TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut.
Travelers Championship is set to attract most of the star studded field of the US Open where some of the top ranking players may chose to stay away for a while to replenish their energies. Rory McIlroy, the winner of this year’s US Open, has already declared
his off-course schedule for the next three weeks and will return to competitive golf for the Open Championship in England.
Bubba Watson, the long-hitting American Left-handed player, will be returning to defend the title he won last year. Watson, who was also featured in last week’s hilarious Golf Boys music video, currently boosts of a strong form and has already won two events
on the tour; the Farmers Insurance Open and Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
TPC River Highlands is the third-shortest course on the PGA Tour with total yardage of 6, 841 yards, par-70. After battering one of the longest course at Congressional Country Club last week, Switching over to the shortest will pose a serious challenge for
the players in the field, who will be eyeing the lucrative $1.08 million winner’s share and precious FedEx Cup points.
With a scoring average of 69.50 for the last three years, the event has been an attractive destination for the pros where they get a chance to unwind after a gruesome week.
Most of the tier-two players on the tour will be returning to TPC River Highlands including, Nick Watney, Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Zach Johnson, Ryan Moore, and Fredrik Jacobson to name few of the many strong contenders in the field.
Mahan is the 2007 winner of the event and finished in top 20’s in four of the events before he fell for the halfway cut at Congressional. His striking capabilities and birdie average is one of the best on the tour and will be pitched to grab the title this
weekend.
Watney boosts off an impressive form with seven Top 10 finishes in his last 12 appearances for the season. He was also not able to make the cut at the US Open with an excess of one shot.
Snedeker, has posted an impressive display of quality sport last weekend when he closed his US Open bid tied for the 11th. He also has three Top 10 finishes for the season and is hoping to break the taboo this year.
Jim Furyk will be returning to post a stiff competition for the left-handed Watson, who is currently trailing him in the FedEx Cup rankings. Furyk has been on top of the rankings since last year.
Alongside the work out on the course, PGA has come up with a new interesting online feature, the PGA TOUR Matchups Game on Facebook. The interactive game would kick off from the Travelers Championship this week and will continue towards the end of the season
till TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola on Sept. 22-25.
