My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Mexico...He was born in Puerto Rico (has PR Birth Certificate) and moved to the states when he was 3.

How does he apply for a passport if he doesn't have a US Birth certificate?

Not sure if it helps, his father is a natural born US citizen and his mother became a US citizen...

Advice??

Also please do not tell me to go to the travel.state.gov/passport website, I could not find the answer there!!

  1. PR birth certificate is good as a US birth certificate. If you have more questions and the government site doesn't help. Call the local passport office and ask them.

It's kind of like asking if a Hawaiian birth certificate is a US birth certificate.

  2. I think that everyone needs a passport to travel out of the country regardless of who they are or where they are from. I'm not an expert on this by any means though.

  3. A Puerto Rican birth certificate is a US birth certificate, just as a Florida birth certificate is a US birth certificate. Puerto Rico is part of the US, it's just not a state.

  4. His father is a natural citizen, his mother became one and he was born in PR.

The reason the .gov site has nothing is because he has no real issues. He just has his father's info, license and birth certificate in hand and just goes to the post office (faster than the courthouse) and applies.

However you cut it he was born in PR and can add a US father on top of that. No problem.
