Traveling alone though Spain?

I will be traveling from Bracelona to Malaga along the costal line. Can this be done on a low budget? How are the people/ is it OK to hitchhike? Are they open and friendly?

People in Spain are great!  Warm, friendly, kind, love to meet new folks, and, as I recall, were great at picking us up when I was hitching, but that was years ago.  I'm older and more careful now, and would take the train, but I'm also able to do that...It isn't all that expensive.  male or female?  that does make a difference.  Carry some pepper spray, just in case.  Or some other sort of weapon.  I always carried my keys in my pocket, so that they could be used, if necessary, then, if anyone made me nervous, I just clasped them, in pocket, between my fingers, works kinda like a brass knuckles, very effective if necessary.  It never was.

It really depends on what you refer to as low budget. The biggest problem you are going to have is the strength of the euro. The euro is now 10% stronger than a year ago and almost 20% stronger than five years ago. If you are from the UK or the USA you will get less for your money. Having said that, travelling on public transport is generally cheap in Spain compared to the rest of Europe. Many places offer menu del dia (menu of the day) and you should eat lunch pretty reasonably. The locals in Spain are a friendly bunch but with hitchhiking you can never be sure. You might get a lift with someone who is not a local. Just be sensible and becareful.
