Traveling by air, can you bring?

a back pack and and carry an extra pair of shoes in your other hand, the shoes are not in any bag,

I would suggest putting them in a bag! I've worked for an airline and they will probably ask you to either put them in your luggage or your backpack. You can carry small tolietries 3oz or less bottels and they have to all fit into one quart sized plastic ziploc baggie. If you have more questions just go to TSA.gov and this site will give you any info you may need.

Extra pair of shoes outside the bag: no

Toothpaste, sunblock, deodorant:  Yes in your carry-on if each of the containers weigh 3 oz. or less.  Make sure they are under 3 oz. though because if the TSA sees something like deodorant, they will weigh it to make sure.  You could also bring as much as you wanted in your suitcase.

I don't think they'll let you carry the shoes - just stick them in your bag.

And you may bring small amounts of toothpaste, sunscreen, deodorant, etc. if it is an amount that is 3 fluid ounces or smaller and will fit into one quart-sized (sandwich sized) Ziploc baggie. You'll only have to put the deodorant in this bag if it is a gel or aerosol.

I work for American Airlines. As far as I know for thoses items you can take it on board the plane but it can only be 3oz and has to be in a 1qt clear ziplock bag. this would go for anything that is liquid anything eles is ok. In a suitcase yes. In a carry-on you can only bring them if they can fit in a 3oz plastic zip-lock baggie. Put the shoes in a bag, and they might let you bring them if they check them. Get there a little bit earlier though.
