  1. i have crossed that border quite a few times.  you only get one month on your tourist card (this could have changed) when you go from guatemala to chiapas state due to the reputation of chiapas and the ELZN.  if you want to stay longer, you can ask for the full 6 months.  from tikal, you can go through belize and chetumal and get to cancun.

if it were me, i would get to "huehuetenango" so i could see  the market in "todos santos" before i got across the border.  then there is a beach in chiapas that all the unconventional, hippy, and free thinkers go.

once in mexico, you could rent a car.  some roads are not good tho.  what you are about to read, i don't know what the bus service is on the road the hugs closest to the beach.

the beach road is in oaxaca.  then it goes north to acapulco (that part not on beach) and beyond acapulco hugging the coast sometimes.  on the map it is highway 200.

i don't know the condition of it, and there may be parts that are not safe to drive at night between ixtapa and manzanillo.  go all the way up to puerto vallarta hugging the beach while driving in the states of michoacan and jalisco tho.

puerto vallarta is the closest big beach to guadalajara....manzanillo may be closer even and that road to guadalajara very is nice.

from acapulco however, you might want to go north on the non toll road to see taxco the beautiful silver city.  then head up to mexico city.  cuernavaca is supposed to be nice too.

that toll road is very nice and has lots and lots of tolls.

  2. No train available.  The bus services in Guatemala and Mexico are good though.  There isn't really a beach front road to Mexico City, but you should easily be able to take a bus to a beachfront city, then cut accross to Mexico City.

  3. Plenty of unexpensive buses but no beach in sight. No trains either.

  4. You can take vans to San Cristobal de las Casas MX from Panajachel or Antigua, GUA.  The trip is about 8 hours and not too expensive.  Most of the little travel agencies in Antigua or Panajachel can sell you a ticket and the van comes and picks you up early in the morning.  Then from San Cristobal there are plenty of Mexican buses and you can weave your way to Mex City and stop at beaches  along the way.
