Traveling from NYC to Portland Or with 2 cats - Advice please!?

Hello,

I will be driving by car with my two cats at the end of the month from NYC to Portland OR. I've taken them on small trips before but we're looking at a 4-5 day trip this time, and during potentially nasty weather - December. Any advice on how to travel with them in the car (crate, free to lounge, etc) and also what a good route would be to try to bypass the mountains and bad weather?? Thank you in advance!

  1. The answers given are pretty good, but I would like to add a few things.  Like the answer about fuel, when you get down to around a half of a tank start looking for a fuel stop.....you never know how long till the next one. also invest in a small hend held C.B. radio I drive a truck for a living and it has kept me out of bad situation more than once. I'm sure you will hear some umpleasent conversations, but they can be a life saver, truckers usualy know of road conditions and alternate routes, if a road happens to be closed. Carry blankets and non perishable foods, and most importantly drive smart, If other drivers are slowing down there is a reason.  And last have a safe trip.

  2. My advice is - don't do it. Wait until the weather and anything else is to your advantage. Don't put your pets through all that.

  3. Check this out:  http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2007...

Those folks took a trip similar to the one you are planning.  They kept their kitties in travel cages I think.

As long as you stay on the interstates you should be OK...  Tune in local radio stations for travel advisories to ensure the highway stretches through the mountain passes aren't closed due to snow, make sure you have enough gas, etc.

    Good luck.
