Traveling from New Jersey to Quebec this summer?

I am packing up the family truckster and taking the tribe from NJ to Quebec this summer. Any suggestions on places to stop at on the way there or back.

Lake George New York is our favorite stop when we do the reverse trip (Montreal to Wildwood).  It is 3 hours from Montreal and is a nice little village with several nice places to eat.  There is a cruise on the lake, or you can just take a walk along the shore.  They have horse carriage rides and there are several factory outlets nearby.  If you are planning on staying, Six Flags has The Great Escape and a resort.

If you are taking I-87 to get to Quebec, then You may want to look at Lake George, as someone else mentioned. Ausable Chasm is in that general area and is an amazing site to see.

I myself liked to stop in Albany for a meal and to tour the state capital. There are many historic buildings there and a museum or two that might be of interest, depending on the age of the kids.

If you can cross over onto Route 7 or take I-89 and don't mind a detour, the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont was a great place that I still remember. As a kid, I went there with my school and was able to see the USS Ticonderoga, a steamboat that was (at the time) being restored to its original glory.

And if you decide to take I-91 or I-93 up to the Magog area of Quebec, there are some amazing wooded trails that you can take in the White Mountains. I can't remember the exact town it is near, but there are places you can park and then just walk or hike on the trails there.

Once you get into Quebec, you have Parc Safari in Hemmingford, or Granby Zoo.

Montreal is under an hour from the US border and has many sites to see, including the St. Joseph Oratory, Biodome, Insectarium, and La Ronde/Six Flags Montreal.

Up around Quebec City, there is the Montmorency Falls, or whale-watching boat tours in the St. Laurence Seaway. That is three hours northeast of Montreal.

Be prepared to deal with traffic around the Montreal area if you are coming in summer. We have the International Jazzfest, the Just-For-Laughs festival, the Formula 1 Grand-Prix, and the International Fireworks festival in the summer and will have to compete for parking and hotel accomodations from June to August.

That's funny - I remember stopping at some diner just outside Albany NY on my way to NYC all those years ago...

Not familiar at all with Lake George and that resort though - sorry!

When you eventually get to Montreal though, be sure to stroll down to the Old Montreal - it's really beautiful and rustic down there, you'll see!

If you're not too lazy or too exhausted from your long trip, you can easily walk from downtown Montreal through to Chinatown and then eventually to the old part of town by the Saint-Laurent river, if you want.

Quebec City is well worth visiting also - it has maintained and preserved many historic buildings and it feels as though you're stepping into a different era or time dimension when you get there... pretty fascinating actually!

Depending on how long you're staying in the Province of Quebec this summer and how much driving you're prepared or willing to go through, you and your "tribe" should definitely check out the Gaspesie region up the Saint-Laurent river - just keep driving NE towards the Maritimes (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in particular) along the river for several hours, you can't miss it! The h**l with those gas prices, huh?
