Question:

Traveling in Panama by myself?

I am supposed to go to Panama by myself in mid -November. I am 20 years old and have never really traveled alone. Are there any hints or suggestions for travel in Panama? I am planning to spend a week at a resort and then spend a few weeks wandering around (lol). Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

  1. That's great to hear of your expedition!!

Look - most people will scare you off - certainly about the wandering about part. Tell you the truth - safety is of concern here. Bloody ambushing of buses in remote areas etc.May I suggest some Asian territories rather - Thailand / Indonesia ..

I travel a lot - currently an expat in Indonesia (Medical field) x 6 months.

However - if there is a specific reason for you to have chosen Panama - GO FOR IT

  2. See the link below.  There is a certain province you should stay clear of because it is so dangerous that even the US Embassy personnel will not go there.  Kidnapping is a big issue there.  You'll be fine in the resort.  When you are 'wandering', stick to the cities and/ or guided tours & tourist destinations.  The people at the resort can probably give you some good ideas, too.

Don't get too sketched out.  Tons of US citizens go to Panama  and have a wonderful time.  You will too.

  3. Stay away from the border area with Colombia and you should be plenty safe!

Check out Boquete in the mountains and Bocas del Toros on the water which are in the same Province!  Lots of expats living in both places so you can get help if you need it from people that speak your language!

I hope you speak at least a little Spanish if you are traveling on your own and if not ONLY go to Boquete and Bocas!
