i know our currency is still relatively strong related to the peso. i was wondering how much normal living expenses are in mexico. i'm going to be there for about a month, and am just wondering how much i'm going to spend on normal expenses like food and bottled water. also, how much would a nice premium bottle of tequila cost in american dollars down there?

  2. Depending on where you will be staying, your expenses will be much the same as they are in southern California. Premium Tequila runs from 20USD a liter, on up to the stratosphere. Its cheaper in Long's Drugstore near the San Ysidro border crossing or at the duty free stores. Mexico isn't the bargain paradise it once was. You will be glad you invested in life experience at all costs. Bien Viaje

  3. Can you add where you will be traveling too?  Expenses can vary widely depending on where you will be traveling.  For example, los cabos, is notoriously more expensive than most Mexican cities.

In Puerto Vallarta, you can live here on an extremely tight budget for a month.  Decent apt rentals start at 500-600.  REAL tequila- 100% agave tequila (Jose Cuervo is not real tequila- which you'll learn at the first tequila tour you go on ;)  starts at $30 here.  Mexican moonshine stuff starts at $4 a bottle and will likely leave you with a horrid headache the next day and some memory loss but that gives you an idea of what you can buy for $15.  ;)

Food- local market foods are CHEAP - and tamales & tacos start at 8 pesos (80 cents) so you can budget pretty cheap for food.  Locally owned restaurants are ridiculously inexpensive- splurge on huge Mexican dinner for less than $10.

Bottled water- we buy our big blue bottled waters (think the water cooler in an office) for 12 pesos ($ 1.20 US)  including tip for delivery- buy a pump for a few dollars and you're good to go.  Beer- 55 pesos for a six pack at the corner store.  45 pesos for a bottle of fake malibu rum.  Shop at a locally owned liquor store and that $37 bottle Kahlua will be $18 USD.  I actually buy $80 vodka there for $27, $40 wine for $14, etc.

If you're going out to cantina's- just watch the signs- someone is always offering a bucket of (6) beers for 50 pesos ($5 USD) and extra long happy hours are typical throughout Mexico tourist destinations.

Eating out- Antojitos (I probably spelled that wrong) are cheap- these are "home cooking" places where you literally go into someone's home (usually designated dining area)  and tell mom what you want for breakfast for a few dollars.  There's one around the corner from where I live and that lady is ALWAYS busy!

Internet  and Cable TV package - $60 a month for the fast stuff.  I think slower internet is $15 cheaper.

Electricity- w/out ac is $60 USD every 2 months.

Taxis- ask in spanish and your fare will magically be cut nearly in half.  $20-$40 (2-4 USD) pesos avg in-town taxi.

As a rule, no matter where you go in Mexico, shop where the locals shop and you'll find it a real challenge to spend even half of what you would in the states.
