Question:

Traveling to Afghanistan?

I am a US citizen and very interested in traveling to Afghanistan. I understand that it definitely has its risks but it has come to my attention that there are various tour groups that are taking tourists out there, mostly to the northern part of the country (which is much safer in comparison to the south). National Geographic has even endorsed several tours to Afghanistan. Anyways, I'm just looking for someone out there who has been on any of these tours or has traveled to Afghanistan as a tourist in recent years. If you could please tell me about your experience and the name of your tour company (along with any advice) that would be great. I should also add that I am a young female so I was wondering whether it is recommended for female tourists to wear a burqa or not (I know that it is not legally required anymore but that many women still wear it so that they are not subject to harassment). If a burqa is not necessary, then what would be the proper dress code for a female tourist?

  1. I went over there three weeks ago. I killed half a city with my bare hands.

  2. i went alone to afghanistan in 2001 from peshawar in pakistan. it's an interesting country with beautiful people, but as far as an american women going i'd probably say you'd be limited in what you can do (for safety reasons).

pakistan is a much safer country to travel to...why don't you go there instead?

  3. I hear Iraq is much nicer in the summer than Afghanistan. Fewer sandstorms too. I would dress for comfort though because of the heat. Hats with large brims, lots of sunscreen, flips flops, halter tops, shorts etc. Last but not least don't forget a body bag with your address and next of kin attached.
