Traveling to Australia, NZ question?

I am planning a trip for this June/July/August.

The first part will consist of one month in New Zealand. This includes 2 weeks volunteering and 2 weeks touring the North and South Islands.

For the following week(s), I have these options:

I can go volunteer for another 2 weeks in Australia.

OR

I can stay for 5 days vacation in Fiji.

Now I know Fiji, sounds sweet, but my parents say that it might be too much vacation and not enough volunteering. I've also been to Australia before, so that's why I'm doing 1 month for sure first in N.Z. Also, the location of volunteering in Australia is not set yet.

For those who have visited all three places, what do you suggest? I can only do the options I've listed above.

Thanks for your help.

  1. I;ve been to all three and live in Auzzie ......fiji was definately a different experience....personally fiji but i live in Auzziee...soo...well I'M goinng to say Fiji...but your folks might be right...YOUR CHOICE!

    GOOD LUCK!

  2. well done to you for the volunteer work, ok heres my opinion, lol, im gonna say fiji fiji here you come, you've been here to oz before so go somewhere different, unwind and relax after your trip to nz cause travelling and volunteering for a month isn't really that relaxing.also since the australian volunteer work isn't set as such theres nothing worse then not knowing where you will end up.whatever you choose though i hope you have a great time, sounds like fun

  3. We would love to have you in Australia, again.

For volunteering - I am sure you know somewhere; but you can also find some roles through seek.com.au - then go to the volunteer page.

My my aren't mom and dad grumble bums - making you work for your holiday.

New Zealand is only a very small country.  Australia is massive it would take you three to four weeks to drive around the outline of it - that is if you could do so safely and you can't.

Fiji - mmmmm maybe not.  They are very good at political problems - seem to almost be on a roster for the army over there to bully the Government.  Also, some of the areas are fairly 3rd world with inadequate medical treatment - we get lots and lots of people flown into Australia from over their for treatment - stuff that they really should be able to treat there.

Have you thought of seeing some of New g****a - the last of the wild places on earth.  They still have nomadic tribes people; there are even a couple of tribes who have rarely seen other humans.  It can be a bit dangerous unless you go through a VERY GOOD TRAVEL AGENCY - or maybe volunteer over there (I suspect you may be doing church volunteering) and holiday in Australia.

Just now the weather in Australia has gone crazy - see www.bom.gov.au - to keep up with what is happening.

Australia and New Zealand have SERIOUS ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGES so if you are back packing DO NOT arrive in either country expecting to easily get some where - you won't!!!

Book and pay for your accomdation BEFORE leaving home - again only through recongised travel agents - not online.  It is safer and easier to get a refund if anything goes wrong.

Look up YHA - Youth Hostels Australia.

Most of all - enjoy your trip.

  4. G'day mate .I say two 2 weeks in Fiji as they need more help than here in Australia, much poorer country.

I been to NZ many times traveling, once traveled around for 3 months.

I don't want to betray my country, but if you have been to Australia before,I would say spend more time in NZ as it is much bigger than you may think. There is heaps to do.Also the Aussie Dollar is strong at the moment,so NZ buck will go further.

I love Australia, but same deal, big place, you need a heap of time for both.

    Hope that helps
