Question:

Traveling to Eastern Europe with no reservations?

Hi All,

A friend and I are looking at traveling to Eastern Europe for 8-10 weeks in Sept 09. We are thinking of booking accomodation in Moscow and St Petersburg but leaving everything open, such as hotels and train tickets. That way we can come and go as we please to whatever country we please. Does anyone see any issues with this (e.g. can't book accom, train tickets might be sold out etc)?

Any thoughts suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks

  1. It has been quite long since I traveled in Russia. But as I remember from past it was ot that hard to get a train ticket when traveling between Moscow and St. Petersburg in September. You might still experience some problems first week of September while some summer. And if you would need to travel just in vicinity of these cities you would be able to buy a ticket for a local train. Those are not booked in advance.

It would still be easier to travel with somebody who speaks the language.

  2. Trains are hard to come by in some areas of Eastern Europe. I would research the availability of everything before deciding to just wing it. Even head over to a book store and take a peek at an Eastern Europe budget travel guide book.
