Traveling to Gary Indiana...?

I have a friend that has relatives in Gary indiana and she invited me to stay with her for a week there. We are very close, but my parents are freaking out because they say Gary is a dangerous place, and if I walk down the street I'll get killed or something. Is this true or are they just exaggerating? How dangerous is Gary really? Because me and my friend just want to walk around and hang out, shop, etc.

I drive through Gary on my way to Chicago. I can't tell what kind of experience you might go through while in town, but Gary is not the most pleasing sight from the highway. It also smells horrible due to heavy manufacturing of some sorts.

Also it probably depends on what part of town you are going to be in. Who knows, maybe some places are nice there. Michael Jackson was born in Gary to my best knowledge and some of his relatives still live there :). That must be too much of an assumption, but you would think if this place was a complete dump, Michael would take care of them and help them move out :).
