  2. Yes, don't go.

  3. I went to Italy last summer...learn a couple of phrases in Italian because some Italians will get excited that you wanted to learn about their culture and you will earn the respect of them. Also Italians are very open and very touchy so if you don't like that-watch out and definitely don't go clubbing. My friend was sitting in a starbucks and some guy picked her purse up off the floor and ran down the road with it-so keep your belongings close to you in cities- Italy is beautiful though and the people are so nice-have fun

  4. 1.  I'm assuming English is your first language.  If you are not fluent in Italian, at least learn a few words.  We got along fine with "grazie" (thanks) per favore (please) and mi scusi (excuse me).  Oh yes - "no parlo italiano, parla ingles?"  (I don't speak Italian, do you speak English?)  Those phrases and a smile go a long way.

    2.  Hold on to your purse or wallet.  Pickpockets are unfortunately way too common, especially in the big cities.

    3.  Beware of insane drivers.  I've never seen them so aggressive anywhere else.

    4.  Enjoy the incredible food and hospitality.  Italian seafood is fantastic.  The gelato is to die for.

    5.  Be prepared for extreme temperatures.  It can get very very hot.  Have water and drink it.

    6.  If you are going to any religious sites, cover up.  If you are dressed in such a way that exposes your knees or shoulders, forget about getting in to St. Peters Basilica.  And that would be a shame because it is GORGEOUS.  Even more lovely than Notre Dame.

    7.  Check out Pompeii and Herculaneum.  Amazing!!!!

    8.  Best beach - Sperlonga on the west coast.  Rent a chair and umbrella and luxuriate in the crystal clear water, eat a caprese sandwich.

    9.  Know that you are going to a wonderful place and others will envy you!  Take a million pictures.

    10.  Check out the fantastic art, music and architecture of Venice.   Do not take a gondola.  A twenty four hour water bus pass does the job nicely.   Do try to eat elsewhere - it is obscenely expensive.  Even a glass of coca cola was higher here than in London, Paris or anyplace else on the planet.  Bring bottles of water with you to Venice.  They will rip you off something terrible if you try to buy it there.
