Traveling to Mexico for Day of the Dead - tips and suggestions?

I want to travel to Mexico during the Day of the Dead this year. Where is the best location? What is the best way to travel there? If doing a cruise, what is the best cruise to look into? If I should fly to Mexico and stay in a hotel, what is the best location and places to visit?

Any tips from experienced Mexico travelers would be helpful.

  1. Short answer,

1.-Patzcuaro in Michoacan, 5 hrs away from Mexico city,3 hours from Guadalajara 30 mins from Morelia.

2.- Oaxaca 4 hr away from Mexico City, 3 hr from Puebla.

both will give you the cultural experience that your looking for and there is a lot to see and do near those places.

  3. Taking a cruise may not work.Cruise ships usually don't give you much time for shore excursions and they travel at night so you would miss any activities at night which,in my opinion is the best part.

On the list below, Merida is near Progresso which is a popular cruise ship dock.

Mixquic would be the easiest as it is in Mexico City. The celebrations in Oaxaca(6 hours by bus) and Michoacan(5hours by bus) from Mexico City.Chiapas can also be reached by bus but is a  longer trip.I don't think there is one "best" Day of the Dead celebration they are each special and unique in their own way.Mexico City would probably be the easiest and least expensive place to fly into.

  4. Oaxaca would be my choice. The Day of the Dead is celebrated all over Mexico, in Baja mostly in the hotels, folk art shops and homes of locals. Some really creative altars.

  5. Youtube.com  may help you make you city selection.

Check out the video of OAXACA.

There are some great festivities in Acapulco that I have personally attended but this celebration is, as you know all over the country.

I was in Cuernavaca in the 80s and there were good festivities as well.

I have heard that Oaxaca is one of the best and its elevation makes for tolerable weather without all the heat and humidity.

Friend of mine attended festivities in Manzanillo and highly recommended it to me.
