Traveling to New York for Labor day...Help?

Hey, so I've been to NY a number of times and I'm not interested in all of the Touristy spots. I've always had fun but have had a hard time finding GOOD night spots. There are so many, I've ended up in the wrong place on the wrong night a few times...so,please tell me where to go for good reggae, dancehall, hip hop clubs/lounges/bars? Nothing crazy, just not dead. Also, there's this place called Nels (all I remember is it was 2 floors w/reggae in the basement, live music, maybe food upstairs, diner across the street(?). Know it?? Thanks!

You'd have to pay me a buttload of cash to ever step back into that c**p trap they call 'The Big Apple' or any other liberal urban area for that matter.
