  1. Don't wear any gold or fancy jewelry downtown there are thieves so be careful. It's a beautiful city and country and there is a lot to see. Enjoy and have fun :-)

  2. Personally I think San Jose gets bad rap. Its so lame and easy to say "stay away from San Jose" - There are plenty of interesting things to do/see in San Jose for a day.  If you are half way street smart you shouldn't have any problems. I walked all over Barrio Amon and Soledad with my camera and didn't have any problems

Here is what I would recommend and all within walking distance from each other

Walk along Aveneda Central (pedestrian mall)

Shop or browse the Central Mercado

People watch at the Plaza de la Cultura

Visit the Gold Museum and the National Theatre

Enjoy the views from the 11th floor of the Jade Museum

    Check out the National Museum.

The Museum of Contempory Art and Design (my favorite)

Shop in the open air artists market at the Plaza de la Democracia

Have lunch at the News Cafe (Aveneda Central & Calle 7)

  3. Yeah its the city but it has a really good night life. Of course you always have to be alert looking over your shoulder making sure you don't slip an don't wear any jewely and dont let any girls stick there hands in your pockets because a lot of guys have lost a thousand bucks and there passport like that so dont walk around with too much cash. But other than that, its really fun. You should go to Tango India, its a gentlemens club that has some absolutely beautiful girls and $5 lap dances, its the bomb. You can also go to some place called Pantera Rosa which means pink panther thats another cool place and then you should go to this sports bar called Del Rey, its fool of girls and the drinks are cheap.

These places im telling you are only cool if your a single guy. The taxis are red in SJ and at night its good to ride around in taxis, its less than a dollar each kilometer but dont catch any taxis that are parked outside of any bar or casino because you cant trust those, try waving down a taxi thats driving because those are good people. The ones that hang around outside casinos are just trying to rip people off. Make sure they turn on the taxi meter in SJ the meter is called ´´La Maria´´ which  means The Mary but thats what they call the meter and it starts at 420 colones, unless the price gets higher in the next few weeks.

Then there is a place called El Pueblo where they have a few dance clubs but those are more for college students or another place called Calle La Amargura.

Have Fun and just walk as alert as you would if you were walking by your self in Downtown LA. ITs not even close to as bad as LA but im just saying keep your guard up. Dont walk around in quiet dark places.

Youll see you wont be the only tourist there are a whole lot hanging around at night having fun.

  4. san jose is the least attractive place in CR.

dont wander around at night and keep an eye on your valuables. i would highly suggest going to Montezuma...it is the most magical beautiful beach ive ever been to. and the tourism is amazing. so much variety. up in the mountains is beautiful too! you can see plant life that youve probably never seen before. and all kinds of exotic creatures crossing your path.

  5. If you wear a backpack, wear it on your stomach, and don't put anything of value in the outer pockets. Keep all money in your front pockets. If you take a bus, keep everything in your lap. The coca cola bus station is notorious for crime, but it's not that bad if you go there during the day and keep your bags close. Get a stamped copy of your passport (I stayed at a school and they did this for me, but i think you can get it done at law offices for about $7) and keep your passport in a safe. This is a legal copy that you can use at banks or show to officers if you have a problem. This is really important as Costa Rica has the highest passport theft rate in the world. Costa Rica also has the highest auto accident death rate, so look twice before you cross the street. A lot of cars don't signal and won't stop for you if you're in the street, in fact, sometimes they speed up. Don't wear anything flashy. Remember, you're a tourist and you will most likely stand out. Costa Rica is a developing nation and a lot of Americans are easy targets for crime. Exhibit the same caution as you would in any major city and politely ask people to step back if they are begging or getting too close for comfort.

Don't be too worried. There isn't a lot of violent crime in Costa Rica, but it's important to keep track of all of your belongings and travel in groups if you can. There's some more really great information here: http://www.therealcostarica.com/

  6. San Jose is the least attractive part of Costa Rica.  It's just a big dirty city.  Think Atlanta or Detroit.  Use some street smarts and don't carry any valuables with you - same as you would in any large city.  It isn't smart to wonder around - use a taxi service.  If you really want to have fun though, you need to do excursion outside of San Jose.  Many of the tour companies will even pick you up from San Jose.  There is white water rafting, kayaking, canapy (you have to do canapy - so much fun!), volcanos, hiking, biking, horseback, ATV tours, and many many more.  Here is some of the San Jose based tours:

    Have fun!
