  1. YOU HAVE TO BE THE REGISTERED OWNER OF THE VEHICLE ,WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE TRUCKERS ,TO TAKE A VEHICLE INTO MEXICO.

If you do take one in and you make it past customs and you get in a car accident with or without insurance your are going to be held in jail until it is all sorted out.

Your rental company will be coming after you for their loss.

Unless this has changed very recently you can not buy insurance to take a rental into Mexico

If you want to take a lease vehicle you need written notarized permission to take it in to Mexico

  2. almost ALL rental car companies will NOT allow you to drive it to mexico. But good luck.

  3. You will be required by the car rental agency to purchase additional insurance for driving in Mexico.  It's not that expensive.

  4. "mikerad" is right...and if you did find a company that would do it I would think it very unwise.  If you were to have an accident, the car can be confiscated till all is sorted out.  Better to use your own car or take the bus.  There is excelent bus service from the U.S. to anywhere in Mexico.
