  1. you may be denied entry to Australia if you do not have a return ticket ,they can turn you away at the airport if they suspect you may be a risk of overstaying your visa

  2. You do not NEED to open a bank account before you arrive, but you can if you wish.

A few of the Banks have a facility to open an account from overseas, but you cannot make any withdrawals until you arrive and identify yourself.  These accounts are usually aimed at Migrants though.

"Most banks will require you to visit the branch that you opened the account at, to identify yourself and activate the new account.  Identification, mainly during the first 6 weeks, normally consists of your Passport, and proof of an Australian address.  After this initial period, you will need more forms of Identification. "

Depending on what visa you have, I suggest checking with immigration, that you will be allowed in, with just a one way ticket.

  3. Unemployment is very low in Australia so there are heaps of jobs available. Particularly in retail and hospitality although you will have to get an RSA (responsible serving of alcohol) first. You could probably find cash in hand work but would have more options with a bank account. You can open the account once you get here though.

  4. I would strongly advise you to check everything before you leave otherwise you might be disappointed. Check the immigration dept website:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-...

The following is taken from a page on the website:

    Financial requirements

You must have access to sufficient funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your holiday. Generally, AUD$5,000 may be regarded as sufficient, but the amount may vary depending on your length of stay and the extent of your travel. You should also have a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia.

You may be asked to provide evidence. Evidence may include a certified copy of a bank statement and an air ticket out of Australia.

  5. Not really. If memory serves me right you have to work in a specific class/field. They are not too keen about hiring somebody who will need future support. As far as the bank account goes, you'll want to do that once you get there. One thing I'll point out is Immigration may give you tough time if you can't provide evidence of support (ie: sufficient funds to cover you) this is something they are known to do johnny on the spot and I've had friends who tried the same thing only to be put right back on a plane for the states. I would call immi and ask them how much in funds you'll need to document they can be a royal pain.
