  1. Indeed there is the problem that Spanish varies from country to country. If you can get past the bad reputation, which is now mostly out of date, Colombia would be a good place to learn Spanish for a gringo/a, the accent in the major cities is very clean and is the easiest form of the language for a foreigner to understand. It is much easier than Spain itself, and can be understood by all other Spanish speakers which is not true of all accents.

  2. Be prepared that 'Spanish' speaking will be different in almost every Spanish speaking country in the world, my brother lives and works in Madrid in Spain itself, and the Spainsh cannot understand Mexicicans, Dominicans or other so called Spanish speaking countries.

Get a tutor for the country you are going to visit, not from a different country.

example, the French cannot understand the French Canadians, as the language has evolved differently.

  3. Go to Antigua, Guatemala. Besides having great Spanish schools, the town has a really neat history and is very close to Guatemala City.

  4. I think Ecuador would be a good country. Here is a website which is the South American Explorers Club http://www.saexplorers.org/club/home

  5. www.monafoundation.org

    Good luck!
