I am 18 yrs old and a UK citizen. I have just finished college and before I go to uiniversity I thinkI would quite like to spend a couple of months in america, but the problem is I would like to make my trip worthwhile and travel all across from florida and tampa bay to new york, san fransisco, and los angeles etc. I don't know how to actually travel around. I dont think im old eneough to rent a car and that would be expensive anyway. And then I have a problem as to where to sleep etc. I just need some ideas of how to do it and the cheapest way to do it.

Thanks

  1. You should visit http://www.bayareavisit.com/ to get travel idea about NY, SF, LA.

  2. Amtrak do a great rail pass:

    http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentSer...

You can do 15 or 30 unlmited travel.  Me and my best friend did this (we got the east coast pass) and we travelled from Boston>New York>washington DC>South Carolina>New Orelans>Memphis>Chicago>New York....all in 15 days. We had a balst...stayed in cheap hotels and hostels (and once at the boston train station over night becasue we didn't book a room ahead...lol)

It was a great affordable and COMFORTABLE way to travel. I would highly reccomend it!

In terms of accomodation have a look at :

    www.hostelworld.com

Hostels are the best places to stay as you'll meet lots of fellow travellers and get tips and hints of good things to do and see.  They are also usually safe and cheap.

  3. For many places you can look for trains that travel for cheaper prices. So, maybe you can land in NYC, disocver it for a few days and fly to MIA. Travel Florida by train or bus. Then take connecting trains to California and from LA you can take a bus to San Fransico and fly home from San Fransico to London. With-in your price range? I don't know? But that's probably the cheapest way for a thorough American trip!

  4. The cheap way of getting around would be by greyhound bus 1-800-231-2222 or http://www.greyhound.com

As far as lodging a cheap wa to go is couch surfing http://www.couchsurfing.com

Example I live in Utah and work in New York so i do a lot of traveling.  Sometimes bus sometimes plane or even train.

  5. If you want rock bottom prices you can do the grayhound bus, which is cheap but take some time. The train is okay, but don't buy tickets with a sleeper car, cause it's not worth it. Amtrack( train) is not as high quality as what you find in Europe, so be ready for that. If you want to travel from the East coast (NY) to the West coast (LA) the best thing to do is fly, check out Travelzoo.com, Expedia.com , Travelocity.com if you reserve early you can get a good price. Travelzoo had great deals just this past week. I would also tell you to go visit the state of Maine, it's called New England for a reason and lobster dinners are only $10.99.

If you stay in normal hotels like Super 8 they only run $30-39 dollars a night and they even give you a muffin, fruit and coffee in the morning.

    Good luck to you

  6. You usually need to be 25 for car rentals, but not always.  Look at some websites - Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and check what they say.

Go for Amtrak trains and even busses though for cheapest.
