Travelling In Brisbane during Peak Hour on Friday?

I am heading from Kingaroy, QLD to Surfers Paradise this Friday afteroon, stopping at Capalaba on my way through. I know my way around and don't ned help with that. What I need to know is whether there is less traffic and congestion going via Caboolture and down the Highway than going through Goodna on the Ipswich Hwy. I know the Ipswich Hwy gets bad but also know how the Gateway gets too. Both ways are very similar in distance travelled but I'm worried about Peak hour traffic. Anyone that lives in the Brisbane area, please help!

  1. If I was you, I would be sticking to the Gateway Motorway and continuing down the M1. It won't be until you get over the Gateway will you strike heavy traffic, but if you leave early enough and get over the Gateway around 4pm, you won't have much problem. Forget the Ipswich motorway as it is a nightmare also at peak hour if not worse.

  2. hmm...as you said, both a can get very busy.

best bet is to go down the Bruce Highway and onto the M1...some of it is 4 lanes of traffic and if you do get lucky and there is no congestion, then you should get there ahead of time.

Most of the congestion on a friday arfternoon is mainly Norhtbound....

  3. if you are going inbound(towards brisbane) on the Ipswich moterway trafic will be OK in the afternoon as most trafic is leaving the city

  4. Totally agree with 1st answer. Do NOT go on the ipswich hyw it's a mess and has road works all through it at the moment. Gateway is better but you'll still get alot of traffic if you get on and off the gateway efore 4pm you'll be right other wise wait till like 6-6.30pm. But there is the other way through Capalaba, Mt Gravatt on all small roads and then you can join up to the M1 and have pretty smooth sailing down to the coast. A bit of congestion around swringwood is all.

    GOOD LUCK

  5. I agree.

If I can possibly avoid it, I don't travel on the highway through Goodna during peak times. I prefer to avoid it all the time but especially during peak hour.

I'd be sticking with the Gateway, if it were me.

Or as suggested, go by another route altogether.
