Travelling Liverpool fans attacked in Napoli, several injured
Ahead of Napoli’s Europa league match against Liverpool tonight, travelling English fans were attacked across the city by mobs of local youngsters.
In the first incident that was reported, a dozen young men armed with sticks and knives attacked and wounded two British travelling fans. The tourists were in the city to watch their team play against Napoli. The injured men, Lee Friar (44) and Alexander
Phillips (53) were taken to Loreto Mare Hospital where the doctors treated them. According to reports the injured men will heal in 10 days. Friar was discharged after first aid treatment while Phillips has been admitted in to the hospital.
The second incident of the evening was reported at Mezzocannone where David Watson, a 27 year old travelling fan, was attacked by a group of Napoli Ultras who were armed with knives. Watson was taken to the Loreto Mare hospital where the doctors treated
the British. David Watson had suffered a cut on his right thigh while also receiving a mild head injury. Watson is likely to stay in the hospital for the next 12 days as his treatment continues.
In yet another incident that was reported by Italian Media, a group of 15 English fans was subjected to severe stoning while the tourists were having their dinner in a downtown restaurant. The tourists were at a table in Mezzocannone when a group of Neapolitan
ultras started throwing stones and bottles at the travelling contingent. A tourist was also shot and wounded. The Liverpool supporter was initially thought to be mortally wounded however timely treatment meant the British will be free to go home in a week’s
time.
The violent acts from the Napoli natives continued deep in to the night. However, no sorry incidents were reported. Italian law officials and military are reportedly investigating the incidents so that appropriate punishments could be delivered to the people
involved. The latest incidents would come as a blow to the Italian football as the country has not yet recovered from the violent incident that led to the cancellation of the Italy-Serbia Euro 2012 qualifier match.
