Question:

Travelling around the world- I need your opinion about my future plans

Well, I'm still young but have big plans for the future about travelling around the world because I love visiting new places, meeting new people and just discovering new cultures. I've looked into writing books about each country I visit so I can hopefully sell them which would allow me to fund other trips. I'm posting this wondering what your thoughts about this is ? Do you think it's a good idea ? Any advice ? Is it even reachable ?

Many thanks in advance

  1. Hi,

Anything can sell as long as it answers to some people needs...and I'm not sure that the world is waiting for another traveler trying to get an income from books about his travel (there are of course exceptions!).

You should find an original idea and link that to your travels: try out also things on the internet, a blog etc....

    Good luck!

  2. I know there are a few people who manage to make a living out of travel writing. But only very few.

They have been incredibly lucky and are very good writers or TV people.

There are so many people traveling and writing diaries, often put in blogs people can read for free, that publishers will not spend much money on travel books anymore.

If you want to write about a country for a travel guide you need to know it much better than as visitor, most people working for a travel guide company have traveled a lot in the past and are now settled down in the country they write about.

Or at least they have been in the country many times and for long periods on an end.

As young aspiring travel writer it will be very hard to impossible to get a foot in the market.

If you are a good writer, you might be able to make a living while traveling, but as I writer I admire says, writing is a full time job, you need to be at your computer 8 hours a day, each day, to make a start at getting a living from it. That is often 8 hours next to your full time job, as you can not afford to wait for the sales of your first book doing nothing.

I follow an other writer, she has written a book, those who have read it like it a lot, she has been working on getting it published for months now, while writing her second book. In the hope that one day they will publish a book of hers.

I would love to do the same as you hope for, travel, write and live from my sales, but I know that my writing efforts will not earn me enough money to pay for my food, even less for my place to sleep.
