  1. It is not possible to reserve seats in travel direction since the travel direction changes. Coming from Mannheim you'll probably go through Stuttgart. Stuttgart has a dead-end station, which means you go in going one direction and leave going the other direction because they use the engine at the other end of the train.

If you are traveling alone it probably won't be a problem to just find a seat without a reservation. If you are traveling with a group maybe you could work it out with someone in the group to change with you.

  2. it is possible to reserve seats in general, though it will cost a little fee. (1.50€ per reserved seat) and is only possible in IC or ICE trains.

However, it is only possible to reserve seats that are either "window" or "hallway", not "facing driving direction" or "looking "home".

I can't tell you how long it will take to go from Mannheim to Munich, as there are plenty of choices to make regarding the train and the ticket, and they all influence how long the trip will take and how much you will have to pay for it. You can check www.diebahn.de, though, and look for a ticket there.
