I was invited to visit with a friend in QC, near Lac-St. Jean. He said to bring my guns if I want. I have a Czech made CZ452-Lux, a .22 bolt action with a 10 round detachable magazine. I have three magazines for it. http://www.cz-usa.com/product_detail.php?id=3

I also have a Marlin Golden 39A, a .22 lever action with 19-26 round attached tubular magazine, the number of rounds varies whether you use .22 short or .22 long rifle.

I just purchased a Savage Classic T Model 93, a .22 magnum bolt action rifle with scope, and a detachable 5 round magazine. I have only one magazine right now. I don't even know if I would bring this one. http://www.savagearms.com/93classic_T.htm

Am I going to have trouble in customs with these rifles? They are reasonably ordinary target, small game and varmint rifles. I am an avid target shooter, not a hunter. Would I be better borrowing rifles there? Can I borrow a rifle from a Canadian? Thanks.

  1. This link should basically answer all of your questions.  From what you've described the only thing you wouldn't be allowed to bring would be a mag holding more then 5 rounds .

  2. even if you could, why the h**l would you?

there is absolutely NO reason that you would need it.

    just don't.

  3. I've lived in Canada my whole life. I have never seen a gun except in the cities way up north. I'm pretty sure you can't even bring a gun from the states to here. But if you find a place that has them i bet you could rent it out.

Why do you need guns anyways???

  4. Weapons are strictly controlled in Canada.  If you are planninging firearms you must declare them to Canada Customs at the border, in writing, using a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration Form.   Also all travellers must have the weapons with them when entering Canada.  By that I mean you can't drive into Canada and ship the weapons seperately.  Remember as well that a weapon is seized at the border it is never returned.  I'd suggest leaving them behind at home or you may find yourself out of luck.

Things to keep in mind about Canadian gun laws...they are quite strict and are just as strictly enforced.  Weapons are generally allowed only for hunter purposes or for use by members of organized gun clubs (excluding police and the military)  also, magazine capacity is controlled and the mag size of your Marlin is over the limit I think.  I believe the mag size must be physically limited to 8 rounds but I'm not 100% certain.

Also, if you are going to borrow a firearm while in Canada you must obtain a Temporary Firearms Borrowing Licence in advance.  I would strongly suggest you contact the Canadian Firearms Center at 1-800-731-4000 and look through their website noted below.
